My Kitchen was founded by Soo Sung Hwang who opened the first restaurant in the food court at the Green Acres Mall, New York back in 1989. At that time, Soo Hwang owned another retail business in the same shopping mall, and found the selection of foods in the food court to be simply bland. When the opportunity came, he decided to take matters into his own hands and came up with the idea for My Kitchen.
My Kitchen was an instant success. Both shoppers and Mall employees loved the food, and there was nothing else like it. After a solid eleven years of experience running My Kitchen, Soo Hwang felt it was time to expand. He closed his other retail business and with the help of his son Solomon Hwang, opened seven more My Kitchen restaurants between 1997 and 2000 in shopping malls throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
Gaining valuable experience, Solomon went on to study and develop the business with franchising plans. In January of 2005, My Kitchen Management Company, Inc, was founded to offer franchising opportunities to qualified applicant who are interested in running a successful restaurant in the shopping mall setting.
